The investigation of the meaning and constitution of human self-consciousness is one of the central tasks of philosophy. In recent years, naturalistic theories have been developed in connection with findings from neuroscientific investigations of human consciousness, which claim to solve these tasks. This book responds to this situation by systematically examining naturalistic theories of human subjectivity (Th. Metzinger, A. Damasio) and relating them to analytical interpretations as well as idealistic theories. Thereby a surprising picture emerges: R. Nozick and J. G. Fichte, for example, developed arguments showing that the explanatory model underlying naturalistic theories does not allow for a complete explanation of self-consciousness. Following considerations by Nozick and J. Austin, the author develops a performative interpretation of subjectivity. According to this interpretation, self-consciousness is a performative phenomenon.
